United Nations International Day against Drugs on Copenhagen’s Walking Street

On one of the longest days of the year, volunteers from Copenhagen Scientology Churches helped local residents and visitors from around the world learn the truth about drugs.

All along Copenhagen’s walking street, young people dressed in signature turquoise T-shirts were helping local residents and tourists learn the truth about drugs June 26, United Nations International Day against Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. These were volunteers of the Say No To Drugs, Say Yes to Life Association. Supported by the Church of Scientology, association members have been providing drug education in the city since 1991.

Their posters, bearing this year’s UN Office on Drugs and Crime slogan “Make health your ‘new high’ in life, not drugs,” invited people to pledge to live drug-free lives.

Volunteers distributed thousands of copies of the Truth About Drugs booklets. Containing information on the 13 most commonly abused substances, these booklets provide the facts of what drugs are and what they do to the individual.

“It is especially important that young people have the truth about drugs so they can make a self-determined choice to live drug-free,” says Kirsten Paludan, director of the Copenhagen association.

Hundreds of volunteers from Scientology Churches and Missions around the world observed United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with conferences, sports events, pledge drives and other activities to bring the message of United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to their communities.

For more than two and a half decades, Scientologists on five continents have been empowering others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education.

The Church of Scientology has published a brochure, Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports. Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”

The Church of Scientology supports the Truth About Drugs, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns. It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.
