Turin Youth Race Against Drug Abuse

Church of Scientology Turin took a leading role in this year’s Festival of San Giovanni with the message of the United Nations International Day against Drug Aguse and Illicit Trafficking.

Spirits were high a Piazza Borgo Dora in Turin June 24 when the city turned out to celebrate the festival of San Giovanni with a race against drugs.

Organized by the AMECE Association, an organization that provides educational and cultural activities for first-and second-generation North African teens and young adults, the race was sponsored by the Turin and Piedmont Regions, City Hall and Turin District 7. The race was conducted in coordination with the Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life initiative of the Church of Scientology of Turin.

Every year, the San Giovanni Festival in Turin focuses on an important social issue. This year’s aligned with the message of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking –“Make health your ‘new high’ not drugs.”

In the multiethnic heart of Turin, athletes, artists, students and volunteers from a wide array of nationalities, cultures, ethnic groups and religions united in a common commitment to creating a world free from the destructive influence of drugs.

In other cities around the world, volunteers from Scientology Churches and Missions held conferences, sports events, pledge drives and other activities to bring the message of United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to their communities.

For more than two and a half decades, Scientologists on five continents have been working in their communities to empower others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education.

The Church of Scientology has published a brochure, Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports. Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”

The Church of Scientology supports the Truth About Drugs, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns. It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.
