Blowing his Horn for Scientology
Alex Douglas joined the Jive Aces, the UK's No.1 Jive and Swing Band, because the band makes people—including himself—feel great. His video is one of 200 “Meet a Scientologist” videos available on the Scientology website at www.scientology.org.
“I never expected to be working as a musician,” says Alex Douglas, the youngest member of the Jive Aces, who plays trombone and also pitches in with kazoo, harmonica and washboard.
Born and raised near London, Douglas, 33, met the Jive Aces while he was still in college.
“They invited me to one of their concerts, and asked me to jump up on stage and jam,” he says. “I had such great fun and they made me feel so much at home, I joined the group and never looked back. The music we play makes people feel great, and they leave our concerts with a smile on their faces, even if they were feeling down when they arrived.”
Douglas grew up in a family of Scientologists. His father began studying Scientology at the UK headquarters for the Church in Sussex in the late 1960s.
“I always sort of took Scientology for granted as a kid,” he says. “But Scientology isn’t something you inherit from your parents—it’s something you do. I knew a lot of Scientologists and I could see they were generally happy but also very grounded and sane, and at a certain point I just decided to look into it for myself.”
Taking some basic Scientology courses, Douglas found it worked.
“The more I learned and used Scientology to help me resolve situations in my life, the more interested I became,” he says. “The word Scientology means ‘knowing how to know’ and it has given me the ability and confidence to learn how to tackle whatever comes up, even if I don't at first know how.”
To Douglas, becoming a Scientologist was the best thing that ever happened to him.
“It has given me myself,” he says. “As people go through life, rubbish starts to pile up—stuff that happens to them, stuff that they themselves do. By using Scientology you dig yourself out and you find that the ‘real you’ is a much happier and better person than the one that was buried beneath it all.”
